If you’ve been keeping up with us, you know that Ray Rice was involved in an altercation with his fiancée a few weeks ago in an Atlantic City, New Jersey casino. While at the time, they were both charged with simple assault, Rice was indicted a few days ago on aggravated assault charges – this seriously ups the ante on the time that Rice could be spending in prison if he’s convicted of these crimes. Aggravated assault charges could mean 3-5 years in prison for Rice, which would be unfortunate for him as well as for fans of the Ravens. However, there might be a catch in the plan to put him behind bars.
Rice married Janay Palmer a day after finding out that he had been indicted for aggravated assault charges. While sources say that this marriage has been planned for weeks and that the couple is thriving and happy, it seems a little suspect that they would get married so shortly after the indictment. It frees Palmer from having to testify against Rice in court. There are rumors of a video with the entire incident; it seems likely that the video exists, given that nearly everything in a casino is videotaped. However, if the video does not exist, there is a good chance that Rice will get off scot-free. Getting married was a smart move, on the whole, given that neither party wants to pursue the charges.
Because Rice is a professional football player and holds a good deal of clout with his fan base and team, there is a good chance that the conviction will mysteriously disappear, but if it doesn’t, he’s definitely looking at prison time for a felony assault. The law holds the same in Maryland, except Rice could find himself doing up to 25 years in prison if he were convicted in Maryland rather than Jersey.
If you’ve been charged with aggravated assault, you need to find a good criminal defense lawyer quickly. The faster you get to a lawyer, the faster you can come up with a strategy to keep yourself out of prison and in the good graces of the law. Keep watching to find out how the Ray Rice saga ends.
